A community festival is planned this week to mark the 15th anniversary of the Quecreek Mine Rescue in Somerset County.

On July 29, there will be public tours of the rescue site.

Nine coal miners were rescued after being trapped underground for 77 hours. Former Pennsylvania Governor Mark Schweiker spoke one-on-one with the Tribune Democrat about the efforts to free the men.

“We never forgot that this was about reuniting nine families,” Schweiker told Chip Minemyer, Tribune Democrat News Editor.

Schweiker was on site during the rescue operation and said he is excited to see the coal miners and their families.
