Former Altoona Police officer found guilty

A former Altoona Police officer facing several charges, including tampering with public records and theft by deception, has been found guilty of all but four of the charges he was facing.

The jury deliberated for four hours before finding Matt Starr guilty of six of the 12 charges.

Starr was fired from the Altoona Police Department in June 2017 after he was accused of approving his own overtime, hours that he spend at the Rocky Gap Casino. He is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the city of Altoona, as well as from local businesses.

The criminal complaint alleged that Starr was using the money to gamble where he had reported a net loss of more than $50,000.

His sentencing date is set for April 23, 2019.
