Following in their footsteps: cheerleading runs in local family’s blood

Competitiveness runs in the Clifford family.

Bre Clifford doesn’t face off in the field. Instead, the 14-year-old hits the mat. Bre’s mother, Kristi, and her Aunt Tracey run Turner’s All Star Cheerleading in Johnstown.

“My grandma started it and it kind of ran down in the family,” Bre said.

Cheerleading is a family tradition. Bre has been training since she was 3-years-old, just like her mom.

“I started when I was probably about 5 and then started cheering,” said Kristi Clifford, Bre’s mom and coach. “I went to Forest Hills. I cheered there through my junior high and high school years.”

Kristi’s sister and Bre’s aunt, Tracey, also competed at Forest Hills.

“We went to nationals, the high school cheerleading nationals in Orlando, Florida when I was in high school,” said Tracey Moss-Koontz, the owner of Turner’s, Kristi’s sister, Bre’s aunt.

Kristi and Tracey’s cheerleading success has come full-circle. Bre and the team won the national Summit Championship in May.

“I was so proud of her as her coach and her mom. And then her winning, it was a great experience. I’m so glad I that we got to experience it together. She’ll never forget the moment and neither will I,” Kristi said.

Now, the girls have moved up to the toughest division and have started training for competitions in the fall. Although Bre is still in high school, she said she wouldn’t mind taking over Turner’s one day: running, jumping and tumbling in her family’s footsteps.

“I think that I would definitely take over the business. It just runs in the family. I think it would be amazing to pass it onto my children,” said Bre. “I love making them proud.”
