When you think of transplant surgery, you think of big city medical centers, but on Thursday, this highly specialized procedure took place at a local hospital. Dr. Parag Parekh performed the first cornea transplant at Tyrone hospital.
“It sets Tyrone up to be really a enter of eye excellence and it really makes it a unique day, not only for Tyrone, but also for this entire area of Western Pennsylvania,” he says.
According to the ophthalmologist, the 45 minute procedure went smoothly and the patient is at home resting. On Friday, he’ll remove her eye patch and he predicts that within a couple of weeks, she’ll see clearly.
Dr Parekh says he performs advanced corneal surgery which requires only two to three stitches, and has a much shorter recovery time. He also specializes in cataract and lasik surgeries.
Dr. Parekh sees patients on the Tyrone Hospital campus and he also has offices in State College.
