The grant from the federal government totals one-billion dollars. A portion was given to all 50 states. Pennsylvania received the fourth largest amount: $26 million.
Physician General Dr. Rachel Levine paid a visit to Johnstown, where resources are badly needed. Dr. Levine met with officials from Conemaugh Health and other local leaders. She said this money will help the state expand access to treatment services, particularly for people who don’t have insurance.
It will also train healthcare providers on overdose prevention and recognizing potential cases of substance abuse. Dr. Levine said there are a lot of resources available, but many people who are in need don’t know where to turn.
“It’s really all hands on deck. It’s really all the departments and the administration, working with the legislature and it’s working with our county and community stakeholders to address this in a coordinated fashion,” said Dr. Levine.
The money from this grant will also increase the availability of Naloxone, not only for first responders, but it will be more readily available at local pharmacies.
