A local man who gave the ultimate sacrifice is getting some recognition today.

Sergeant John Frederick Bridges of Bellwood was killed in action on March 7, 1945 in Germany.

Not only was he awarded the Purple Heart and Oak Leak Cluster, but decades later, he’s getting a bridge named in his honor.

State and local officials, and members of his family unveiled the sign for the John Frederick Bridges Memorial Bridge.

“It’s a solemn occasion, but it’s also a nice time for us to celebrate somebody that’s done great things for our country and somebody that’s a native son of our area,” Senator John Eichelberger said.

The sign honoring Sergeant Bridges is already up, the bridge was formerly known as the Grazierville Truss Bridge in Snyder Township, Blair County.
