The streets of Altoona were filled with patriotism Monday as hundreds marched for America’s heroes.

“I wouldn’t miss it,” John Fusco, a Korean Air Force veteran, said. “It’s out of respect for those who did not make it back.”

In the crowd, veterans stood proudly. They were honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“If you were in a war you would understand why they should celebrate these people who give their lives up for us to be free,” Fusco explained.  

We remember and we reflect on Memorial Day. It’s a way to thank men and women for putting their lives on the line so we can live ours freely.

We also recognize those who still stand at the ready, like Brendan Weber, who will be going through his advanced individual training for the U.S. Army after he graduates high school this week.

“Military runs in my family,” Weber told us. “Honestly the army has just been like a second family to me so I really wanted to join.”

On Memorial Day, we recall heroes so our veterans know their selfless sacrifices are not taken in vain.

“You can’t forget the people that gave you everything you have today,” Fusco said.

The parade started on 8th Avenue and 17th Street. It ended with a special ceremony at the Robert E. Laws Veterans Mall.
