Enjoy a green Christmas with these recycle options

While Altoona may not have a white Christmas, it can end the season a bit greener this year.

The IRC Recycling Office is working with local partners and municipalities to offer recycling programs for Christmas lights, gift wrap, cardboard and gift boxes, plastic bags and film, Christmas trees and old electronics.

All these items can be recycled at the Buckhorn Recycling and Compost Facility during regular business hours. Various drop-offs have been set up for specific materials.

Christmas lights can be recycled at the following locations: both IRC Recycling & Compost Facilities at Blacksnake Road and Dysart and Dunnings Highway in Duncansville, City Hall offices on 12th Street in Altoona, and Leydig True Value Hardware on Bedford Street in Hollidaysburg.

Electronics can be dropped-off at the Buckhorn Recycling and Compost Facility every day during their regular business hours. They can accept computers, keyboards, monitors, laptops, televisions, and Freon containing appliances. Fees may apply and can be checked at IRCenvironment.org.

Packaging can be dropped-off at the Logan Valley Mall on December 26 and December 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the holiday drop-off event. You are encouraged to bring cardboard boxes, gift boxes, and wrapping paper. They are not able to accept any plastics or Styrofoam at the drop-off event.

Live undecorated Christmas Trees will be collected at the curbside in Hollidaysburg and Tyrone. Altoona and Logan Township residents can drop off their trees at the city highway yard on 6th Avenue or the Township highway yard at Chief Logan Circle. Both of the IRC Recycling and Compost Facilities will be accepting trees free of charge.
