The Elk-McKean All Stars junior league team won the match against Delaware in the Eastern Regional Championship game in New Jersey Wednesday.
It was a close game, Delaware leading until the seventh, and final inning. With bases loaded and two outs, the All Stars pulled off the win 3 to 2.
The team will now go on to the Junior League World Series in Taylor, Michigan.
In Ridgway, signs were already up to congratulate the team, including at the Ridgway American Legion.
“We’re just really excited about our local kids, you know from all the areas, and just rooting them on, hoping that they’re going to do good,” said Ridgway American Legion assistant manager Wendy Shefcyk.
For those supporting the team, they say their championship win is a proud moment.
“We’ve never had a team from this area make it to the Little League World Series, so it’s an incredible accomplishment for them. They’re to be congratulated, and the towns are so, so proud of them,” Jack Cleaver said.
The team will be returning home on Thursday for a meet and greet at the Johnsonburg Fire Department’s social hall at 7 p.m.
Food and monetary are also being collected at Elk County Foods for the team for their trip to Michigan.
The players are ages 13 to 14 and come from Ridgway, Kane, Wilcox and Johnsonburg, which are in Elk and McKean counties.
They won the Pennsylvania championship game on July 29.
The Junior World Series begins on Sunday, August 12.
