The diversity presentation on Islam and Middle Eastern culture took place at Westmont Hilltop High School Thursday night.
The key speaker, Samaah Sbeitan,is a Muslim Westmont resident whose kids go to school in the district. She shared her experiences and information about the religion and culture.
The NAACP Johnstown Branch hosted the event. Initially, the presentation was going to be held during school hours at Westmont Hilltop High School, but was canceled after some backlash.
More than 100 people attended Thursday night’s event, including one parent with three kids in the district. He said he learned a lot.
“I’m not very religious myself but I think you have to know your neighbors and understand them to be part of a good community,” said John Grumbling, a Westmont parent.
Sbeitan said she’s given presentations in the past and hopes to speak at more schools because it will help create a more inclusive community.
