Those two African American candidates are Reverend Sylvia King and Ricky Britt. Both are running for council seats.
Alan Cashaw, the president of the Johnstown branch of the NAACP, said the biggest issues facing minorities in Johnstown are education, investing in businesses that will stay in the area, and promoting technology and tech companies.
While the NAACP is a bipartisan organization, Cashaw said he personally endorses both King and Britt for council, along with Marie Mock and incumbent Mayor Frank Janakovic. He believes they will fight for those three issues, while also representing minorities.
“I personally do want to see people of color on our city council because we’re more than 10% of the folks downtown. So, we should have it there. We got to come out and vote. Not just black folks, all people got to come out and vote. That leadership will appear based on us coming out to vote,” said Alan Cashaw, Johnstown NAACP President.
Cashaw said everyone should get out and vote in the primary elections on Tuesday, May 16th because voters have a direct say in the leadership that makes decisions in their hometowns.
