The child sex abuse scandal has been extremely costly for the Altoona Johnstown Roman Catholic Diocese. A financial summary released by the diocese shows that it paid out more than $21 million dollars from July of 1999 to this month.
The largest amount–nearly $16 million went to victims for settlements and awards. The diocese also paid $4.3 million in legal expenses.
Insurance covered around $4.5 million of the costs, leaving the diocese to cover the remaining $17 million.
