Altoona Area School District was on lockdown today, April 4, for a period of time.

Around 9:30 a.m. a man visited the Head Start program located inside the Washington-Jefferson school. After he left the building he was seen handling a weapon in his vehicle. Washington-Jefferson was immediately placed on lock-down and AASD Police were called.

The male also visited the Junior and Senior High School looking for an administrator. When he was told the administrator was not at the building, he left the Jr. High.

When visiting the High School, the metal detector search didn’t reveal any weapon.

The man was then located after leaving the High School and questioned by the Altoona Police. It was verified that he has a concealed weapons permit.

He was released by police and a letter of trespass will be issued.

During the time, The Learning Express at W-J, AAJHS, AAHS, and Penn Lincoln were all placed on lock-down.

At no time did the man possess the weapon while on school grounds.
