A blind Cambria County man hopes officials take action to help disabled residents get around independently and safely.
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials said there is only one audible crosswalk in Cambria County with instructions to inform blind residents it’s safe to cross the street. It is located in Upper Yoder Township at the intersection of Harshberger Road and Goucher Street.
The blind Johnstown resident, Dennis Knipple, hopes city and county officials look for funding to install crosswalks so that blind residents can get around on their own.
“Disabled and blind people need more help than other people. We have no choice in that life. Other people have choices, we don’t. I want blind people to be safe and be able to go out and enjoy life,” said Knipple, a Johnstown resident.
PennDOT said there are currently no other requests from townships or boroughs in the county to install crosswalks with verbal commands for disabled residents.
