Crews were on the scene of a steel mill fire on Wednesday.

Flames broke out inside a Gautier steel mill building on Clinton Street in Johnstown this afternoon.

The fire was put out 2 hours later.

No one was injured.

Firefighters believe hot metal may have sparked a fire in a pit filled with hydraulic fluids.

The chief says putting out the fire was a challenge because of electrical risks.

“Obviously the mill building is a very long building and trying to get into that area,” said Tony Kovacic, the Johnstown Fire Chief. “We also wanted to make sure it was safe, especially before we put water in that area because of electrical housing.”

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

No word yet on the extent of the damage to the building.
