The Pennsylvania State Health Department is warning that some residents in Centre County may have been exposed to the measles.
With a lot of people in the State College area for festivals, which means that there are more people that could have been exposed to the measles.
Friday, Pennsylvania’s acting secretary of health alerted residents that a person with a confirmed case of the measles visited three locations in the borough, leaving others concerned.
“It’s frustrating cause you don’t wanna get sick especially like, this past week was finals week for me so you get nervous that you’re gonna get a disease from something,” Penn State student Michelle Schafer said.
The three locations that exposures may have occurred include Penn State’s bookstore and the Lion’s Pride on Friday, July 7, and the Target on Beaver Avenue on Monday, July 10.
With potential risk of exposure at the bookstore, some Penn State students say this seems like disease deja vu.
“It’s upsetting because we also had a case of the mumps back in February around thon season and…Since it’s just easily preventable with vaccinations its frustrating that it’s still coming up,” Schafer said.
The measles is highly contagious but can be prevented with a vaccine.
“Yeah, ya know, I’d say I’m concerned. Mainly for people who weren’t vaccinated…We don’t necessarily know guidelines of like people from other places,” Penn State alum Nate Sauers.
According to the CDC, infants that are too young to be vaccinated, people who did not get the vaccine, or are from parts of the world where there is low vaccination or circulating measles are most at risk for the disease.
Anyone that may have visited the three locations on the 10 and 7 is advised to contact their health care provider to make sure their vaccines are up to date.
