CLEARFIELD, Pa. (WTAJ) — PA Waste provided the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection its response to deficiences found in the Camp Hope Landfill application.
The company submitted hundreds of pages worth of information responding to concerns by the DEP, but the Clearfield County Commissioners say none of it answers the county’s concerns.
“These are technical, scientific and engineering issues that have been addressed,” commissioner John Sobel said. “The real issues, we feel, facing Clearfield County are issues of capacity and recycling.”
Sobel said if the landfill is built, the county would lose its recycling agreement with the landfill company it currently uses.
Camp Hope Landfill would be located in Boggs Township along State Route 153.
It would be a 849 acre facility and process 5,000 tons of trash per day.
The commissioners said another concern not addressed is where all that trash will come from.
“I’m opposed to out of state trash and anything that’s dangerous or environmentally hazardous being shipping into our state and into our county,” commissioner Tony Scotto said.
The final say for if the permit is granted comes from the DEP. The commissioners said they will appeal if PA Waste is granted the permit.
