Centre County-New jury summons system “saving taxpayers thousands”

Local jury duty commissioners are making a big change to how you respond to jury duty.
They say it will save money and simplify the process.

The paper jury summons will now be a thing of the past for most people, instead people selected for jury duty in Centre County will now respond electronically.

Forget the ink, paper, and stamps.
You won’t need them to respond to a jury summons in Centre County.
Commissioners say responding online is saving tax payers thousands of dollars and a lot time.

“They will be able to have a faster turn-around rate to know if they’re excused or not,” Hope Miller, Jury Commissioner for Centre County Government, said.  “If it has to be reviewed it will take 24 to 48 hours.  All excusals, deferrals, requests for undue hardship will be reviewed and approved by a judge.”

This program will also help jurors at the courthouse.

“We’re working on eliminating names for privacy, so each juror will be signed a number to use, instead of their name,” Miller said.  “We also have a return call system, if a selection needs to be canceled we can shut hit a button and everybody gets notified, they don’t need to come.”

If you don’t have internet call the number on the postcard that was mailed to you and request a traditional paper jury summons .

Everyone needs to be watching for a post card from Centre County in the mail.  If you’re selected for jury duty, you can go to the link on the post card, which is where you can fill out the questionnaire.
