A car went up in flames in Blair Township just after midnight on Sunday.

Officials said it flipped and crashed into a pole on Reservoir Road. Two people were trapped inside.

Without thinking twice, a bystander rushed to the rescue before first responders even had the chance to arrive.

“My first reaction was just to run to the car,” Leonardo Ruiz Jr., who helped save two people from a burning car, said. “I wasn’t even thinking about myself getting hurt. I just hurried up and got them out as fast as I could.”

With the flames quickly spreading, Ruiz headed for the passenger door and got a woman out. He then went back for a man.

In a matter of minutes, the car lit up. Chaotic moments that had the whole neighborhood shaking.

“The flames were really bad,” Ruiz told us. “There were a lot of people out helping. It was a pretty bad scene.”

Ruiz headed back to that scene Monday afternoon. It was a lot calmer of a day, but he’s still in shock.

“It made me realize how to take this life more serious because you may never know,” he explained. “You may not be guaranteed tomorrow.”

Once the victims were taken to the hospital, crews spent the night putting out the fire.

Meanwhile Ruiz still doesn’t know who he pulled from the flames that night.

“Hopefully they’re doing okay and I can meet them in person,” Ruiz said.
