A new resource in Blair County is giving kids an opportunity to do some hands-on learning.

The born learning trail lets families connect while enjoying a range of educational activities.

“It promotes parent-child interaction, literacy, environmental awareness, and physical activity,” Melanie Shildt, from United Way of Blair County, said. “It’s just so great to see kids being outside instead of on an electronic device.”

Interactive signs are posted throughout Prospect Park in Altoona. They all have a different mission to complete. We caught up with one family as they checked out everything it has to offer.

“I thought it was really fun,” Twyla Leaper said. “You have to read the signs and then you have to follow them and do what’s on the ground.”

The concept is simple. It’s all about making early childhood learning fun and more accessible to the area.

“We know that the key to success for children both in school and in life is quality early learning,” Shildt said. “This is just one simple way that we can add to that piece of the puzzle for children and families in our community.”

This is only one of five learning trails in Pennsylvania, but the United Way hopes this is the first of many in the region.
