Bilger’s Rocks visitor center to open soon

GRAMPIAN, CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ)– The new visitor and education center at Bilger’s Rocks near Grampian in Clearfield County is close to being completed.

Volunteers are turning the old cabin into the center so visitors can learn the history and science of the area.

“This is the icing on the cake,” Bilger’s Rocks Association President Terry O’Connor said. “Most of us have always been interested in using the rocks, this wonderful outdoor area, as an educational area.”

The center will allow people of all ages and abilities to experience the rocks.

“The public can come and see the artifacts we have and learn about the history of the rocks and what is here,” association secretary Barb McCracken said.

Volunteers also hope to use the center teach children about different science fields.

“We want to bring kids in, get them interested, hope that some of them will go onto college and learn some of the disciplines,” O’Conner said. “The forestry, the flowers, the earth sciences, the geology, the archeology.”

Construction is funded by a $25,000 Clearfield County Recreation and Tourism grant and is expected to be completed in about a month.

Funding also comes from donations and the help of volunteers.
