Beta Theta Pi members to return to court in August

Sixteen members of Beta Theta Pi returned to court Tuesday, as part of a two-day continuation for their preliminary hearing.

During cross examination, the defense attorneys were given the opportunity to explain what they were and weren’t involved in, getting up to and after the death of Timothy Piazza; a big theme was weighing the difference between what is forced and voluntary.

Several defense attorneys asked the detective testifying if pledges are by definition – forced to consume alcohol. The detective said not physically, but believes they felt compelled. The topic appears to be fueled by the question of who was responsible for Piazza’s alcohol intake throughout that night, leading up to his falls.

There are a lot of variables the defense attorneys are challenging to negate the D.A.’s position that putting on, or being part of a social event encouraging drinking is to blame for the cause of Piazza’s death. Defense attorneys have been very careful clarifying statements by Parks Miller, using words like “they” and “everyone.”

Members are expected to return to court on August 10 and 11.
