For generations, the Calvin House was the place to go and celebrate. Now, the long-time owners decided to retire, so the community they served wanted to show their appreciation.

For more than 35 years, the Calvin House in Altoona hosted Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas meals for many families. Owners Denny and Lidih Helsel said they are ready to take some time for themselves. Some of the locals wanted to say thank you and show their appreciations for all those years of service.

The Rotary Club of Altoona and the Kiwanis Club of Altoona started holding their meetings at the venue almost 30 years ago. President of the Kiwanis Club Dave Scott said he’s sad to see the place that meant so much to him close its doors.

“We’re very sad that it’s closing, actually Denny is retiring. It’s almost gonna be impossible to replace. It’s not replaceable to be honest with you, so it’s been a main stay for this community for years. And like I said, very sad that it’s closing,” Scott said.

He added that the Helsels were gracious to host the Kiwanis club for so many years.

“We thought they’d be here forever, obviously, so yes. We are very sad and again, we can’t thank Denny and Lidih enough for everything they’ve done for the Kiwanis Club of Altoona.”

The long-time community staple will close after the new year, but until then, it’s all hands on deck to get all of their holiday decorations in order. All events previous booked up to the new year will continue as planned.

Denny Helsel shared some amazing stories about the clients that he’d served over the years. He said Carol Channing came in and ate. Afterwards, she said to him, “After being on the road for 45 days, this is quite the treat.”

The Calvin House has quite the legacy, and Denny and Lidih Helsel will be missed.
