Next week will be a historic moment for one local girl’s basketball team.

It’s been nearly three decades since the Bellwood-Antis Lady Blue Devils have made it to the state title.

Boys and girls from across the school district all gathered to wish the girls luck for their game against West Catholic Monday.

They even had a special visitor, who was with the first team to make it the state title in 1990.

“The game Monday, is like every other game you play, four corners, two the teams, the same court and basket dimensions,” said 1990 coach Terri Harpster.

Assistant coach Kyley Longo says basketball is bringing them all together.

“The kids are loving it. It’s bringing our community together. The girls are so excited, it’s nice to see the excitement rallying around them.

Longo says it would mean the world to bring home a gold ball, but she’s proud no matter what.

“These kids have done great things and we’re going to continue to do great things and this is community is going to support us no matter what and that’s what makes Bellwood a great place.”

Coach Harpster has faith in the 2018 team.

“28  years from now, people will be talking about the 2018 Lady Blue Devil Basketball team who won the state championship!”

Teachers and students are off school Monday cheer on the girls.
