Baker Elementary hosts first ever STEM event

Today was the first ever Girl’s STEM Day at Baker Elementary in Altoona.

This special day taught young girls about STEM careers further down the road. STEM stands for science technology, engineering and math.

Today’s presentation was for girls in grades 3 to 6.  Women professionals in those fields were speaking throughout the day to the students.

“I always tell students, kindergarten all the way through 6th grade, because I’m only ending at 6th grade, they don’t need to pick a career right now, but it’s good to have an idea to think about some possibilities for down the road,” said School Counselor David Caldwell.

“I think it’s fun for me to…umm have a hands on experience with a lot of different things…just to feel what it’s like,” said 6th grader, Karinna Wolfe.

And Mr. Caldwell says the school district is hoping to make this an annual event.
