Animal shelter needs volunteers, supplies after kennel cough outbreak

A local animal shelter needs your help as they deal with a kennel cough outbreak.

At this time, the Central PA Humane Society is not able to take any dogs or allow adoptions because the shelter has had several cases of the virus. They’ll be closed until September 5th, 2018 for a quarantine period. Officials at the rescue told us it’s the best way to alleviate to strain quickly and effectively.

“That way no one is getting it,” Laura Conrad, the volunteer coordinator with the Central PA Humane Society, said. “You’re not adopting out any dogs with kennel cough and you’re not facing kennel cough down the line from the same strain.”

In the meantime, it has been busy as staff continues cleaning. Right now, they’re in need of more than just volunteers.

“We can always use cleaning supplies, bleach and laundry detergent,” Conrad said. “We go through a ton of paper towels and we’re also in need of large dog wire crates.”

While the quarantine stays in place, the cat area will remain open.

If you’d like to donate your time or supplies you can contact Laura Conrad at 814-942-5402 ext.102.
