A local animal shelter issued a warning to the community on Friday. The Cambria County Humane Society is reporting that three stray dogs brought to its shelter have tested positive for parvovirus. All are being treated and recovering from the highly contagious virus.
The society says preventive disease control measures are being taken for all dogs at the shelter. The facility is also being closed to volunteers and the public until May 9, to prevent spread of the disease.
The shelter is urging residents to have their dogs vaccinated against parvo. Routine vaccination can protect dogs from the potentially deadly disease.
Signs of parvo include high fever, lethargy, vomiting, and bloody diarrhea. The illness is more common in young puppies, but can affect dogs of any age.
The cat kennel is open for visits and adoptions. Also, if you’ve lost your dog, you can still come to the shelter and meet with staff to locate your pet.
