A little girl from Altoona helped light up Broadway over the weekend.

Sophia Hollobaugh is sharing her smile and raising awareness for a condition that has never held her back.

“I’m going to get choked up,” Jake Hollobaugh, Sophia’s dad, said. “It was very special they contacted us. I even forgot that I sent the picture in. I thought in a million years they’re not going to pick her out of millions of people throughout the U.S. that have Down Syndrome.”

Sophia was chosen from 2,000 entries to appear in New York City as part of the National Down Syndrome Society’s annual Times Square video presentation.

On Saturday her picture was put on display. It shows her reaching for the stars, proving nothing holds her back.

“I titled it reaching the stars,” Hollobaugh told us. “She’s just sort of reaching out there and saying here I am.”

Sophia’s picture is a reminder to the world about the contributions and milestones of people with Down Syndrome.

“They can do anything as long as they put their mind to it and have friends, family and support,” Hollobaugh said. “There’s no stopping them.”

Down Syndrome awareness month kicks off in October.
