Thursday is World Down Syndrome Day and one local family is working to raise money for people living with the genetic disorder.

Jake and Jeanette Hollobaugh’s daughter Sophia was diagnosed with down syndrome when she was born.

They told us the Down Syndrome Center of Western PA has cared for her since she has been a baby and they wanted a way to give back. They’re now raising money for the center.

“We adopted Sophie from birth and we had a lot of learning to do,” Jake Hollobaugh said. “The center itself gave us literature, what to expect and what not to expect. They’re doctors but they go above and beyond what they have to do.”

Collection bins are set up at three stores in the Greenwood area of Altoona. Those businesses are Studio 3 Twenty One, 31:25 boutique and Lucky’s Beer Distributor.

This fundraiser will last until the end of March. The Hollobaugh’s also plan on raising money again during Down Syndrome Awareness month in October.
