8th Annual Slapshot Cup Hockey Tournament

The 8th Annual Slapshot Cup Hockey Tournament is set for this weekend.

The tournament will feature 28 teams, the most in the tournament’s history. The teams will come from all over the country, Canada and Germany.

This year, former Pittsburgh Penguin Tyler Kennedy will attend the tournament on Saturday, Oct. 21st from 12-2pm to sign autographs and meet players and fans.

“Anytime we have an NHL guy, a Stanley Cup champion in the building, that’s a good thing. Tyler is a good guy and he’s going to be starting some clinics, supporting youth hockey in the area. So, it will be good having him here supporting the tournament and helping grow our game in this area,” said Josh Piro, the tournament director.

This year, the tournament will also honor the Johnstown-Cambria Student Hockey League’s founder, the late Sam Coco. Tournament officials will be running an essay contest for Cambria County Student Hockey League members. Winners will receive Johnstown Tomahawks season tickets and money to help offset the cost of participating in the league.

The tournament is set for October 20, 21, and 22 at 1st Summit Arena at the Cambria County War Memorial and the North Central Recreation Center in Ebensburg.

The tournament is free and open for the public to watch.
