Even after 10 years, the loss of a loved one never seems to get easier. Not having answers makes closure that much harder.
“I miss her every day,” Mary Hancock, Sherry’s mother, said. “The night she was killed I said to my husband ‘oh they’ll probably find out in 2-3 days.”
It was November 25, 2007.
Two families got the news they never wanted to hear.
Their loved ones, Sherry Leonard and Jason Specht, were brutally murdered in a Mifflin County home. They were beaten and then set on fire. The suspect never caught.
“I remember that day, everything about that day, everything about the days after, I can remember every single detail,” Eric Specht, Jason’s brother, said. “I know if I can remember that kind of stuff, the person who did this can definitely remember exactly what happened that day. I hope they replay that every day in their head and it haunts them.”
Year after year the families gather together to bring the double homicide to the public’s attention once again.
“I don’t have him here,” Jessica Specht, Jason’s daughter, said. “I don’t have a dad to walk me down the aisle. I don’t have a dad to do the father-daughter dance. He doesn’t get to see the person I’ve become.”
Knowing someone knows something, they’re waiting for even the smallest piece of information to bring them peace.
“I just hope justice prevails,” Hancock said. “Somebody is out there and they know who they are.”
This coming Saturday, on the anniversary of the double homicide, the families are holding a candlelight vigil. They’re not talking about their search for justice, just simply remembering and honoring their loved ones.
