BEDFORD – Each year, state troopers from across the area have a way of showing dozens of kids what its like to be a police recruit during Camp Cadet.

“We have them busy from the time they get here Sunday until graduation Friday,” said Tpr. David McGarvey, PSP.

Camp cadet is only a week, but troopers pack as many lessons in as they can.

“We’re planting the seed that maybe somewhere down the road some of these cadets will follow in law enforcement.”

“I thought about it before hand and the more and more I do this the more it makes me want to do it,” said Cadet Jacob Dawson.

Dawson’s favorite part is the obstacle course.

“I thought it was very fun. My favorite party was that everyone gets to root on everyone and we’re all fun and fair with each other.”

The course is modeled after marine training, and the camp is modeled after the State Police Academy. But it’s not just for future officers.  The Fish and Boat, and Game commissions, are there.

“It’s really fun because we get to learn about all the things people do and you get to learn about how people think their job is easy but it’s actually hard,” said Cadet Violent Johnson.

Violet Johnson’s dad is a trooper. She was one of a few cadets that went through the course, to actually get all five pull-ups in.

“Well you got to like try your best through everything and you can’t stop going. And you got to have a lot of body strength,” said Johnson.

The cadets said the best part is doing this course, to see if they’ve got what it takes and challenging themselves.
