A man accused of murdering his wife in Centre County was in court for his trial Monday.

Police say Alois Kudlach shot and killed his wife Nuria last fall inside of their State College home, but Kudlach claims he did it in self defense.

His trial got underway just after 9 a.m. with opening statements from both prosecutors and the defense. That was followed by six people testify before noon, including police officers who responded to the scene, a neighbor, and a 911 operator. The jury also saw  various pictures from the scene.

Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller called this case a staged self defense that failed miserably. The defense argues Kudlach’s actions were justified as he felt threatened. His attorney asked the jury to try and walk a mile in his shoes to understand what he thought and felt.

The couple had been estranged and their 18-year-old son was inside of the home the day of the shooting. He is expected to testify during this trial.

The trial is expected to last the entire week.
