Pennsylvania has a new mandate requiring that all counties provide at-risk kids a way to continue attending their home school district if they’re forced to move.

The program is funded solely by counties, with no assistance from grants. In Blair County, the transportation costs will be paid for out of the general fund.

A local superintendent said it costs money to move students and this is what’s best for them.

“I just know this is probably what’s in the best interest of children and the best interest that we can guarantee as stable as possible an education environment for the kids,” Dr. Charles Prijatelj, superintendent at the Altoona Area School District, said.

The superintendent said all seven districts in Blair County had worked together before the mandate to keep kids in their home districts.
