An iconic ski resort in our region has reopened after an 11 year break.

Laurel Mountain was once an exclusive club for the wealthy of Pennsylvania, first opening to skiers in 1940 and then was gifted to the state by the Mellon family in 1964.

The Nutting family, which owns the Pittsburgh Pirates and Seven Springs Resort and Hidden Valley, now also own the ski resort and has spent the last three years getting the Somerset mountain back in shape.

The family hopes skiers will return to the beautiful slopes.

“The opportunity to market the three resorts together, brings people throughout the region,” Bob Nutting said, adding that this is all about creating a regional attraction, like what’s been done in Colorado and New Hampshire.

Local residents said this is a gift to the region.

“I skied here 50 years ago with my friend, father and his father,” Henry Scully said. “For Bob Nutting to bring this back is a real treat.”

Nutting is hoping people from Washington, Baltimore, Columbus and Cleveland all turn their sights to the Seven Springs Resorts.

They are hiring employees to work on Laurel Mountain and in various food service areas.
