Hurricane Michael has become an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane that is expected to bring life-threatening storm surge, hurricane-force winds and heavy rain to the northeastern Gulf Coast.
As of 9 a.m., Hurricane Michael’s maximum sustained winds are at 145 mph. Some strengthening is possible before Michael makes landfall today.
Hurricane Michael is about 90 miles southwest of Panama City and about 90 miles west-southwest of Apalachicola.
Michael is moving north at a speed of 13 mph. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 45 miles. Tropical force winds extend outward up to 185 miles.
Winds of 65 to 75 mph are expected areawide in the Wiregrass this evening. 4 to 6 inches of rain will generate scattered flash flooding tonight as well. Stay weather aware!
The Panhandle counties will get the main brunt, however Geneva and Houston counties could as well have major impacts along with our Georgia counties; Early, Miller, and Seminole.
The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline. The water has the potential to reach the following heights above ground if peak surge occurs at the time of high tide.
