A new state record was set Wednesday, for the biggest buck shot during archery season and a local hunter put his name on the record. 

 

Huntingdon County native, Eric Carns took down the state’s third largest buck in history in Clearfield County, even bigger than a buck shot in 1949 in Lycoming County.

 

“Still shocked that I shot something this size, this big,” Carns said. “It’s just unbelievable. It still seems like a dream.”

 

Carns said he was in the right place at the right time when his dad kicked the deer up toward him, while they were hunting on family property in Beccaria Township last November, and made a split-second decision on the ground that paid off.

 

“I shot it at 20 yards,” Carns said.

 

The previous record for a non-typical white tail with a bow, had a score of 209.

 

Big Game Scoring Program Coordinator Bob D’Angelo said he knew the rack was a winner when he first saw it.

 

“I knew this was a good one, but it even fooled me a little bit and scored a little higher than I thought,” D’Angelo said. “But it’s a tremendous deer.”

 

“I shot a ten point last year and got it mounted. It was 20 inches wide,” Carns said. “This years just makes it look small… I thought that was the biggest deer I had ever shot.”

 

Carns had the buck’s teeth sent to a lab in Texas to determine how old it is. He expects to hear back in a few weeks.

 

The buck had 26 points, 13 on each side.
