A hospital in the region is temporarily banning visits to children’s and women’s units by kids under five. Geisinger Lewistown Hospital has issued the restrictions due to seasonal increase in cases of pediatric respiratory syncytial virus or RSV, a respiratory virus that infects the lungs and breathing passages.
A Geisinger pediatrician says most healthy people recover from RSV infection, but it can be severe in infants.
The CDC says RSV is the most common cause of pneumonia in children under one year of age.
