A new memorial in Bedford honors those who fought in the Korean War.
It was a $70,000 project that members of the community said was worth every penny.
William Wolfe, a Korean War Veteran, said it’s a tough topic, as he remembered his best friend who lost his life in the service.
Wolfe recalled his friend crossing paths with a deadly tank bomb.
“If he wouldn’t have ran over it, I would’ve got it the next morning, first thing, so it means a lot to me to see that we are after 60 years, we are finally acknowledged and not forgotten,” Wolfe said.
He added that the memorial is a constant reminder of why we have a free country,
During the opening ceremony on Saturday, the community saluted the hundreds of Bedford County natives who fought in the Korean War.
Saturday’s ceremony…Was an opportunity to remember each local servicemen.
David Baer, a local resident said “when you heard the honor roll of those who had fallen, it’s a moving experience.”
Surrounding the monument, bricks are laid out with the names of every local Korean War Veteran.
A small token Wolfe and his wife said they’ll treasure, but the memories will remain bittersweet.
