The superintendent at the State College Area School District released a statement Thursday, just one day before Donald Trump becomes the 45th president of the United States, after a social media post surfaced planning a walkout.

STATEMENT:

“Friday, January 20, 2017, several State High students are coordinating a student-led peaceful demonstration. Our high school principals have communicated with students to ensure they understand our support of student rights, a safe environment, and expectations for students to attend scheduled classes.

At this time, following face-to-face discussions between student organizers and principals, students are opting to remain on campus, as this is a safer situation. Our students are now choosing a more responsible and peaceful way to express their thinking than leaving campus.

Though I recognize the magnitude of tomorrow’s inauguration, I am responsible to support the rights of each student while ensuring we provide a meaningful day of learning.”
