A local girl’s birthday is just a few days away and this year, she wants to celebrate by giving back.

Katherine will turn 10 on Saturday. She’s started an online fundraiser to raise donations for Centre County Paws. Her goal is to raise $10,000. In years past, she’s collected donations for the nonprofit. Her family’s dog, Blue, was rescued from the shelter.

“I just decided that I had enough stuff, so I thought it would be a lot better to help the dogs and cats who needed it,” Katherine said.

Right now, Paws has 20 dogs in the shelter, eight in foster care and dozens of cats available for adoption.

“How many nine year old’s do you know that will say no to birthday gifts, I just want to make gifts to Centre County Paws to help animals,” Christine Faust, Director of Development for Paws, said. “It’s incredible.”

So far, Katherine has raised more than $2,000.
