A Brockway girl who makes dog food during her summer vacation just learned she’ll be honored in Washington, DC.

We have more on what she’s been doing to help our four-legged friends.

The 11-year-old is making time to volunteer and donate to her favorite cause: animals.

Now in the sixth grade, Grace Preston says she already has three years of fundraising experience, and it started with a project on her 8th birthday.

“I saw someone in the newspaper who for their birthday, instead of presents, they were giving stuff to little children at a hospital, so I asked my mom if I could do the same, except for animals,” says Preston.

“We have two shelter dogs and she was asking about how did we get them, and why were they at the animal shelter, so she just wanted to help all the other animals that were there waiting for homes,” says mom Sandy Preston. “So, she did that for her birthday and took the stuff over to the humane society and she just really felt really good about that, so she wanted to do some more “

Her mom, who’s a reading specialist for younger kids at the Brockway Elementary School, says Grace has raised $6,000.

She started cooking dog biscuits, using a dough made from peanut butter and water, but no sugar.

“My mom found a recipe on Pinterest,” says Grace Preston.

She’s been selling flea and tick repellent too at Brockway’s farmers’ market and giving checks to Gateway Humane Society and Willow Run Sanctuary.

“Every summer, I put cans in shops and I use my business called Grace’s Goodies and I have my own Facebook page as well,” says Grace.

Gateway president Bob Adamson says they used the money to help buy a big shed near the entrance.

Grace says she got crafty, using cardboard for one donation.

“I made it look like a giant check,” says Grace.

Grace says she’s not sure what she wants to do when she grows up. For now, she just wants to help animals

“Kids can make a difference in the world, not just adults, because most adults get jobs and work at like fire stations and kids have to do homework, so kids should go out there and do something,” says Grace.

Grace just won a second contest with a $1,000 prize.  The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards includes a trip to Washington and she says she’s excited to tour the White House. She’s one of two Pennsylvania winners as a top youth volunteer. She’s also won a scholarship from Kohl’s.
