The Elk County Community foundation is in need of more applicants for nearly 90 different scholarships for both highschool and college students looking to pursue a college degree. The foundation focuses on many different community areas, however, the foundation is well known for their scholarship program. All 89 scholarships are available to students within the five surrounding counties. Each scholarship has different requirements for the student to be considered.
Executive director, Paula Fritz Eddy says the biggest need is for the scholarships of students already enrolled in an institution or university. There are some scholarships that only have one or two applicants, says Eddy.
Last year the foundation gave over $160,000 in scholarship money for students to apply to any fees including tuition, housing or books. “[The scholarship money] is much needed during this time, where the price of college is skyrocketing,” says Eddy. The money from the scholarship can nearly double as well. The foundation is part of the PACT program, where the state will match the money in the scholarship with state funding, if the student is eligible.
All 89 scholarships at the Elk County community foundation are from local donors. Anne Sinibaldi-Hertzig created a scholarship, along with her sisters in her father’s memory. As a local band director, Sinibaldi-Hertzig, says her father was a very well known man. His legacy will live on, while helping other students, which is important says Sinibaldi-Hertzig.
Anyone with questions on how to apply can contact their local guidance counselor, or visit the foundation’s website.
