A jury has found a former university president guilty of a misdemeanor.

Graham Spanier was convicted of child endangerment, which was knowingly violating the duty of care for a child he was responsible for. He was acquitted on a charge of second degree child endangerment and conspiracy charge.

“There are zero excuses when it comes to failing to report the abuse of children to the appropriate authorities,” Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said during a press conference following the verdict.

Spanier’s attorney did not call any witnesses in his defense, indicating in closing arguments that Spanier was not told that a 2001 report about Jerry Sandusky in a shower with a boy was sexual in nature. However, the man that made that report, Mike McQueary testified to the jury that he believed it was sexual in nature, and said so at the time.

“He had a duty of care and protection for the children that came to Penn State campus and he failed in that duty,” Deputy Attorney General Laura Ditka said.

Also hindering Spanier’s case was that co-defendants Tim Curley and Gary Shultz pleaded guilty last week to misdemeanor child endangerment, saying they wish they had done more.

The date for sentencing has not been set. Spanier faces 5 years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
