President Obama dedicated the first ever national monument to LGBTQ rights.

On Friday, he announced the new Stonewall National Monument which will be near the Stonewall Inn in New York City.

In 1969, police raided the inn and the patrons fought back.

That police raid launched a week-long protest and was the start of the modern LGBTQ movement.

According to the White House, the monument will encompass Christopher Park, the Stonewall Inn, and the surrounding streets and sidewalks.

It will also be added to America’s National Park system.
