Brick by brick, the Veterans Grove in Bedford is growing.
The Korean War memorial was the latest addition.
Names of veterans native to the area added to the site and Gail Hill hopes her dad will be a part of the display.
“He fought in the Korean War and he just recently passed away. And I thought this would be a good way to honor him,” Hill said.
Just across the way, World War II veterans are honored, as well as those who served in Vietnam.
Dennis Tice, a member of the League of Pretty Good Guys, said he and five other started the project some years ago.
“It started out as a labor of love that we never, never thought we’d be able to pull it off,” Tice said.
He said the goal is to honor every Bedford native who has made the ultimate sacrifice.
Tice said so far there are about 600 local veterans who are known to have lost their lives during any war.
In 2018, Tice said the next addition will be a timeline walkway.
He said the bricks will start from the Civil War and lead up to the year 2020.
So far over $300,000 have been put into the grove.
“I can’t tell you how astounded we have equally been at how much Bedford County citizens have stepped up to support us,” Tice said,” This is all, all funded by Bedford County citizens, there isn’t one government dollar in it.”
