One local Eagle Scout candidate spent this Labor Day honoring our American flag.

“As the symbol of our nation, it’s of the utmost importance to most people,” explains Michael Elder.  Elder, from Duncansville knows it’s importance when the flag is displayed and when it is too old to fly and needs to be retired.

This Eagle Scout Candidate says, “It’s a symbol of our nation and you definitely wouldn’t want to throw that away. What you need to do is for properly retiring it, you would burn it in a fire and then pick up the ashes and bury it.”

Elder saw the need for a permanent area to conduct this ceremony. As his Eagle Scout project, he raised the money from sponsors and spent the summer building this Flag Retirement Ceremonial Pit and Patio for the Duncansville VFW Post

Monday morning – it was officially dedicated.  Fellow boy scouts and leaders from Troop #3031, along with veterans and local officials were there for the first retirement ceremony.

“Once you let the ashes touch the ground, that’s their final resting place,” explains Elder.

A time honored tradition now in a permanent place.
