Vietnam veterans were honored at an Altoona Curve game Tuesday night, with a first ever “Welcome Home” event at PNG Field.
The Curve, the Van Zandt VA Medical Center and some area businesses helped send 1300 Vietnam veterans to the game with guests.
In all, there were 2600 people in several sections of the stands. Organizers say it’s never too late to say thank you.
“I think it might be a little more meaningful, they are at an age where they have children and grandchildren family members who can celebrate with them and understand the honor it is to be a Vietnam veteran and what they did to serve our nation,” said Andrea Young, who works in the Van Zandt Public Affairs office.
Bills Mullins, a retired Vietnam veteran says he’s thankful for the event.
“[It’s] just a wonderful opportunity and privilege. I thank God I’m an American. I’d go back again if they’d allow me,” said Mullins.
Van Zandt officials say they hope to make the night an annual event.
