County to use grant funds to improve borough

Blair County is allocating nearly $100,000 of grant funds from other areas in the region, to the smallest borough in the county in order to clean up several streets and sidewalks in Newry.

The funds come from a community development block grant that’s used to serve low moderate income areas.

“Here you have a small borough like Newry that’s 55 percent borough wide, so obviously street and road improvements would benefit those populations,” Trina Illig, a Blair County grants coordinator, said.

Illig said that they determine low moderate income populations through surveys for the grant and that it’s difficult to give grant money to boroughs if residents don’t complete and return surveys.
