County courthouse gets upgrade

The County Courthouse in Ebensburg only accepted check and money orders as payment — until now.

The building is installing new technology so it can accept credit and debit cards.

Sheriff Bob Kolar, of Cambria County, said the upgrade will save people a lot of time.

“Because there are so many people that rely on credit cards now. And to send them out, make them go get a check or money order for the amount. It’s a waste of time for a lot of people. And this way they can just come in with their credit cards, and swipe that,” Sheriff Kolar said.

Getting systems updated was a mutual decision between the Sheriff’s department and the Treasurer’s office.

Lisa Kozorosky, Cambria County Treasurer, said it’s been a long time coming and “It’s just a convenience to our customers. And they can come in and buy a dog license, a hunting license, a fishing license and they can use their debit card or credit card”

“It’s definitely overdue. And it’s going to help the people out so much because I mean, they’re used so frequently anymore. It’s more or less a sin not to include them in the paying process,” Kolar said.

You should expect a small service fee with your card but Commissioner Tom Chernisky said it’s small price to pay for a quicker process.

“There might be a small fee for the consumer but that’s the convenience that they would pay. So it allows that money to get into the county’s checking account within a 24 hour period,” Chernisky said.

It will take about four weeks until everything is set up, until then checks and money orders are still in play.

The facility will not accept cash for transactions.
